Our Leawood Optometry Staff Can Answer Your Questions About Sports, Vision, & Eye Safety

According to preventblindness.org, more than 25,000 people require medical treatment for sports-related eye injuries every year. At Vision Professionals of Leawood, we're committed to lowering those numbers and making sure that every athlete in our community maintains optimal eye safety during their sport or activity of choice.

Curious about sports eye care at our state-of-of-the art facility? Check out some of our most frequently asked questions.

Who Needs Sports Eye Care?

Everyone should see an eye doctor on a routine basis to ensure their vision and eye health are optimal; we recommend at least once every 2 years for healthy adults. But people who participate in the exercise, physical activity, and or sports of any kind especially stand to benefit from consulting with a Leawood optometrist. Our doctors can assess the athletic person's vision to make sure they can see optimally, which is likely to improve their athletic performance.

This makes sense, of course, since we rely on our visual system to help us with everything from balance to eye/hand coordination to depth perception.

What are the Most Important Things to Consider when it Comes to Sports and Eye Safety?

  • If you plan on participating in a sport or activity, you should have your visual acuity tested.
  • Depending on the nature of your sport, you may need to invest in protective face wear and eyewear (such as googles or masks).
  • Consider wearing sunglasses (prescription or non-prescription) when participating in outdoor sports (in sun, water, and/or snow).
  • Remember that allergies and the weather can affect your eyesight and eye comfort, and may negatively impact your ability to see clearly.

What Kind of Services are Available to Help Improve Sports Performance for Myself or my Loved Ones?

Is the upcoming sports season fast approaching? Bring your child in to see us for a comprehensive eye exam first. This allows us to prescribe vision correcting eyewear if needed. We may also be able to provide vision therapy exercises to improve the way your eyes work and the way your brain and body assimilate visual information.

Additionally, we can recommend medications to help manage allergies or dry eye symptoms that otherwise lead to blurry vision.

Of course, many athletes choose LASIK eye surgery to correct refractive errors (and to avoid the hassle of wearing glasses or contacts during sports). If you choose this route, our team can provide necessary pre-and post-surgical care.
